Hospice FAQs
Navigating hospice care can feel overwhelming, especially when you're faced with making decisions for yourself or someone you love. At Arc Hospice, we believe that education is the first step to confident, compassionate care. Below, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process.
What is hospice care?
Hospice is specialized medical care for people facing a chronic illness when curative treatment is no longer the goal. It focuses on comfort, quality of life, and supports the patient and their loved ones.
Who qualifies for hospice?
Patients may qualify for hospice when a physician determines that a life-limiting illness has a prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its typical course. But it’s important to know: many people wait too long to access care that could offer relief, support, and improved quality of life much earlier.
What services are included in hospice care?
Hospice includes care from an interdisciplinary team—nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers—plus medications, medical equipment, and 24/7 availability for symptom management. All services are tailored to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each individual.
Where is hospice provided?
Hospice can be provided wherever the patient calls home—whether that’s a private residence, assisted living community, or skilled nursing facility.
Does hospice mean giving up?
Not at all. Choosing hospice doesn’t mean giving up hope—it means shifting your focus to comfort, dignity, and making every moment count. Hospice supports the patient’s wishes and helps families spend more meaningful time together.
How is hospice paid for?
Hospice is covered 100% by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. This includes medications, equipment, and visits related to the hospice diagnosis. At Arc Hospice, no one is ever turned away due to inability to pay. We are committed to ensuring every eligible patient receives the care they need, regardless of financial circumstances.
When should we consider calling hospice?
Most people qualify for hospice earlier than they expect. If someone you care about is experiencing more frequent hospital visits, increasing pain, difficulty with daily activities, or rapid health decline, it may be time to call. At Arc Hospice, we’re here to talk—no obligation, no pressure.
Will hospice take over everything?
Hospice partners with families. You’re still very involved—our team simply provides expert support, guidance, and relief from the heavy lifting.
Is hospice only for the very end?
No. Many people benefit from hospice for months. Calling earlier allows more time for symptom management, comfort care, and emotional support.
How do we get started?
You can call Arc Hospice directly. We’ll work with your loved one’s doctor to see if hospice is appropriate, and we’re happy to answer questions with no obligation.
