What is Hospice Care?
Hospice is specialized care designed to support individuals and their loved ones during a life-limiting illness. The focus of care is on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. Hospice care addresses the medical, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of each patient while also being there to support their loved ones. The goal is to effectively manage a patient’s pain and symptoms

When is Hospice Care appropriate?
To be eligible for hospice care, the patient’s doctor must certify that he or she has a terminal illness. These individuals choose palliative care that focuses on symptom management rather than curative treatment, as well as choose no extreme measures to sustain life. A registered nurse will perform an evaluation to assess the patient for eligibility criteria. Hospice-appropriate individuals may exhibit some or all of the following:
- Frequent hospitalizations or ER visits
- Progressive weight loss
- Deteriorating mental capacity
- Recurrent infections
- Overall decline in condition

Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies. Commonly, hospice care provides financial relief to those with a life-limiting illness because all services related to that illness, such as medication, equipment and supplies, are covered by hospice care benefits – with few out-of-pocket expenses.
Our hospice physician is responsible for developing a comprehensive medical care plan for each patient and ensuring that every member of the hospice team, caregivers, and the patient's family are knowledgeable of the plan of care.
Hospice services vary based on the needs of the patient and their family. Typical services include visits from nurses and other healthcare professionals, pain and symptom relief, training for Caregivers, spiritual and emotional support, bereavement services, and personal care support.
Hospice care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The frequency and level of care varies depending on the patient’s and family’s needs. Hospice visits are based on specific needs, the care plan, and the condition of the patient.
Depending on the progression of the disease and the time of referral, the length of stay in hospice care varies greatly. Some people believe that a person qualifies for hospice only if he or she is bedridden, unable to care for him or herself, or acutely dying. This is untrue. Many of our patients are still quite mobile, are able to care for themselves and can participate actively in daily living. A few patients have lived over two years in our care while continuing to meet hospice guidelines. Early referral to UpliftedCare can help ensure that a patient receives the maximum benefits available
Hospice care is for people who are nearing the end of life. The services are provided by a team of health care professionals who maximize comfort for a person who is terminally ill by reducing pain and addressing physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs

Dear Arcturus staff, Thank you so much for the care, concern, and love you provided to my mother (Linnie Thomas) and to her family during the last months of her life at Sandy Springs place! Words cannot express the appreciation we have for Mary Hunt. We are so blessed by all the long hours and special care she provided to mother and for her efforts to enable us to communicate with mother during with strange times of no visitation. Mary truly fulfills her calling as a caring nurse.

I cannot give Arcturus the praises they deserve. I am grateful for all healthcare workers and employees for the excellent care they gave to Ms. Thelma at The Holly House and The House of Emanuel. They supplied all the medical products she needed. When contacting them via telephone and email they were available to attend to the issues at hand. We were never turned down for anything that Ms. Thelma needed. They were kind, gentle and concerned for her and the family. I will always remember Arcturus for the wonderful services they provide.
